A few days ago, by chance, the first edition
of my “Werther” came into my hands,
and this song, long lost to me, began to sound again.
It is hard to understand how a person
could have endured forty years in a world
that already seemed so absurd to him in his early youth.
Vor einigen Tagen kam mir zufälligerweise
die erste Ausgabe meines “Werthers” in die Hände,
und dieses bei mir längst verschollene Lied
fing wieder an zu klingen.
Da begreift man denn nun nicht, wie es ein Mensch
noch vierzig Jahre in einer Welt hat aushalten können,
die ihm in früher Jugend schon so absurd vorkam.
