All learned teachers and tutors are agreed
that children do not know why they want;
but that adults should stumble about this
earth like children, without knowing
where they come from or where they’re
going – like them, not acting to achieve
fixed aims, and also like them, are ruled
by cookies, cake, and the rod –
this is what nobody likes to believe;
and yet I think it is palpable.
